Research in the School of Accounting and Commercial Law

The School of Accounting and Commercial Law is engaged in a diverse range of research across the full spectrum of research methodologies.

Research activity is organised around a number of research interest groups, which are also involved in hosting a variety of workshops, discussion fora, and conferences in their particular areas of research interest. These groups also have strong links with a range of business, government, and non-governmental organisations.

Staff are involved with several research projects which are funded externally.

The School also has a large group of postgraduate students enrolled in its Honours, Master's, and PhD programmes. These students are encouraged to take an active part in the School's research interest groups and School seminars more generally.

The Centre for Accounting, Governance, and Taxation Research

The Centre for Accounting, Governance, and Taxation Research was also established within the School of Accounting and Commercial Law in 2001 in recognition of the need to foster research that addresses accounting, governance, and taxation issues that have potential impact on the Asia-Pacific region.

The research process of the Centre brings researchers together with accounting and legal professionals and representatives of business and the public sector in ongoing discussion and exploration of issues, ideas, and analysis of relevant work.

The Centre has a working paper series which publishes research from School staff and others on topics that are relevant to the work of the Centre.

Each year the Centre runs a number of Business Links seminars for the business and public sector communities where leading academics and professionals present on current issues affecting those communities. Senior students are also welcome to attend these seminars.

Chair in Public Finance

The School hosts the Chair in Public Finance, sponsored by the Inland Revenue Department, Treasury, the Ministry of Social Development and Price Waterhouse Cooper, which aims to bring academic research and public policy debate together. The inaugural Chair is held by Professor Norman Gemmell.
