Accountability Mechanisms and Sustainability Practices in the Ghanaian Cocoa Industry

Email: miriam.arthur@vuw.ac.nz

Profile:

Having lived in a cocoa-growing area, Miriam observed the persistent socio-economic difficulties faced by cocoa farmers and their families. These difficulties, which influence their engagement in deforestation, remain largely unaddressed, despite corporate narratives of progress in sustainability initiatives. This disconnect inspired the research project, which seeks to explore the current state of accountability and sustainability in the cocoa industry.

Miriam’s study aims to provide an opportunity for policy recommendations aimed at supporting the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1: No Poverty, SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, and SDG 15: Life on Land, in alignment with broader efforts to address the multifaceted challenges confronting the cocoa industry.
