Around 120 people, many from the legal, accounting and financial professions, attended Dr Eliza Mik’s presentation at Rutherford House, proving that the hype surrounding blockchain is on the rise.

Dr Mik, from Singapore Management University, explained that although the assertion that blockchain will revolutionise commerce (and the legal system) may be unjustified, the technology does in fact raise some interesting commercial and legal issues.

Associate Professor Susan Corbett initiated Dr Mik's visit to Wellington.

"This lively and comprehensible explanation of the technology and the potential practical applications of blockchain stimulated much audience discussion, which unfortunately meant there was insufficient time to complete an analysis of the legal issues," she said.

"We hope to invite Dr Mik to return and continue her presentation on this important topic at some future date."

The Centre for Accounting, Governance and Taxation Research (CAGTR) organises Business Links Seminars throughout the year, tailored for local businesses and members of the public where leading academics and professionals present on current issues and research.
