Outstanding Contribution to the Profession Award

Congratulations to Professor Tony van Zijl FCA who has this week received the Outstanding Contribution to the Profession Award from the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants in recognition of his long career and contributions both in New Zealand and internationally.

Congratulations to Professor Tony van Zijl FCA who has this week received the Outstanding Contribution to the Profession Award from the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants in recognition of his long career and contributions both in New Zealand and internationally. Tony has had extensive involvement in accounting standard setting. He was a foundation member of the Accounting Standards Review Board (from 1991-2000), a member of the Financial Reporting Standards Board from 1989-1999, the Deputy Chair from 1995-1999, and again a member when he was Chair from 2002-2003. He was also Chair of the International Accounting Standards Board Revaluation Group and the New Zealand representative at meetings in London of the International Accounting Standards Board with its partner national standard setters. In addition, Tony was Director of Research for NZICA from 1985 to 1988.

Tony has an impressive research record in financial reporting and financial management. He continues to supervise a range of PhD students in addition to his commitments as Director of the Centre for Accounting, Governance and Taxation Research and managing Accreditation for the Business School. This Centre has been instrumental in disseminating research and linking business and government with academia.

In addition to his Fellowship with NZICA, Tony is a Life Member of the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand (AFAANZ) and is a former New Zealand President of AFAANZ. He is also a Certified Securities Analyst Professional member of the Institute of Finance Professionals of New Zealand.  He is a member of the Valuation & Property Standards Board of the New Zealand Property Institute.

His recent teaching in Fiji, Vietnam, Mongolia, Nigeria and Tanzania has been to graduate students and university staff  in World Bank sponsored courses on capacity building for management and sustainability of natural resources. He has also presented to executive groups in Mongolia, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

He is a Consulting Director of Sapere Research Group and a Director of Financial Analysis Consulting Group.  He has provided consulting advice, litigation support and expert evidence in a large number of assignments. In 2009 he was appointed a Lay Member of the New Zealand High Court.

Tony was awarded the AFAANZ Outstanding Contribution to Accounting & Finance Practice Award in 2005 and a Victoria University Research Excellence Award in 2011.
