Service tunnels

The service tunnels on Kelburn campus can present their own set of specific hazards.

The service tunnels are a restricted space rather than a confined space. Some hazardous work may alter the environment so that the tunnel becomes a confined space.

Check your University liaison before starting work. They may ask you to discuss your work further with the Senior Advisor Health and Safety (Asset and Infrastructure).

There are a number of hazards in the service tunnels that you will need to take into account:

  • low headroom
  • vertical drops
  • reduced lighting
  • gas, water and sewerage pipes
  • waste pipes
  • asbestos containing materials (including panels and pipes)
  • trip hazards
  • electrical cables, panels and switchboards
  • dust
  • wet surfaces
  • ladders for access and egress
  • restricted access, egress and working space.

The minimum personal protective equipment (PPE) you will need to enter the tunnels is steel cap boots and a hard-hat.
