Professor Jonathan Unger

Professor Jonathan Unger is a specialist on Chinese society, rural reform, factory life, nationalism and cultural revolution history. He has written and edited fourteen books on China as well as many articles and essays.

His work Chen Village (co-authored with Richard Madsen and Anita Chan), a history of the Chinese revolution in one village, is regarded as a modern classic and has been through several editions.

Professor Unger is a Professor in the Political & Social Change Department of the Australian National University, Canberra. He was founding Director of the ANU Contemporary China Centre, and founding editor (with Anita Chan) of the China Journal, Canberra. In recent years he also served as a consultant on China for the Asia Development Bank and AusAID.
