Find out the requirements for studying towards a Chinese major while on exchange.

Where to study

You can study for credit towards your Chinese major in a Chinese speaking country at the following universities:

• Peking University, Beijing
• Renmin University of China, Beijing
• Wuhan University, Wuhan, Central China
• Xiamen University, Xiamen City, Southern China
• East China Normal University, Shanghai
• Nankai University, Tianjin
• Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Guangdong
• National Taiwan University, Taipei

Non-Chinese speaking countries

You may also complete a university-level Chinese language course while on exchange at a university in a non-Chinese speaking country and have it counted towards your Chinese major. However, you must contact the Chinese programme student exchange coordinator before any arrangement can be made.

You may be assessed before you are allowed to proceed with enrolment in other Chinese language courses.

Chinese major requirements for exchange

Before going on exchange

You need to have completed CHIN101 before going on exchange. If you were exempt from your 100-level Chinese courses, you must have completed CHIN 112 before you go on exchange.

For a major in Chinese, the best time to go on exchange is when you're studying 200-level Chinese courses, or at the beginning of 300-level Chinese courses.

Courses to take on exchange

You should study intensive language courses that involve speaking, listening, writing and reading and are deemed to be the equivalent level and duration of the course you would otherwise be taking at Victoria.

In general, Chinese culture courses will not be cross credited unless the language of instruction is Chinese.

Completing your Chinese major

To complete your Chinese major, you must complete a 300-level course at Victoria—CHIN 312 or CHIN 313 or CHIN 314.

Cross credit process

How courses are cross credited will depend on the level you are enrolled in before your departure and the length of your stay overseas. Generally, you will be credited for one language paper per trimester spent overseas, provided the language course you complete on exchange is the equivalent of the language course you would otherwise be taking at Victoria.

Cross crediting is at the discretion of the Chinese programme. Make sure you consult with the Chinese programme student exchange coordinator upon your return. You may be assessed before you are allowed to proceed with enrolment in other Chinese language courses.
