Derek Gill

Derek Gill is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow with the School of Government

His recent research has focused on digital government, international regulatory cooperation, the social investment approach, regulatory management, public sector management, interagency working and organisational performance measurement and management.

Background

Derek has worked at the Ministry of Social Development, the State Services Commission and the Treasury. He has also been seconded to the OECD to work on public governance issues, and earlier in his career worked in the New Zealand Embassy in Washington. Derek has served as a long-standing Board Chair and Treasurer on a number of voluntary and not for profit organisations.

His career has seen him investigate a wide range of public management and public policy issues, all of which have informed his teaching, research and publishing at both the School of Government and the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research.

Derek is teaching FCOM111 in 2024 and he has previously taught Stage 3 courses in Public Economics and Public Management as well as a range of short courses in Public Policy and Machinery of Government.

Qualifications

Derek has a MA from George Mason University of Virginia, and a BA (Hons) and Diploma of Accounting from Victoria University of Wellington.
