Taiwanese-born French animator awarded five-week residency at the University’s Miramar Creative Centre
Shih-Yen Huang will begin her post at the MCC at the end of September.
Shih-Yen completed a qualification in oil painting from the National Taiwan Normal University and received a diploma in Fine Arts from Beaux-Arts in Tourcoing. Additionally, Shih-Yen studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, with a focus on animated film, graduating with honours in 2020.
“I am very excited to have an award-winning animator for the screen artist in residence this year, coinciding with our first Animation and Visual Effects Film Festival (ANFX).” Miramar Creative Centre director, Kevin Romond says. “We are also excited that Shih-Yen has offered to share her experience and knowledge with our staff and students.”
In 2021 Shih-Yen wrote and directed a short film La Confiture de Papillons (Butterfly Jam), which has since been selected for over 70 film festivals, and won 16 awards.
The University and the Embassy of France established the Screen Artist in Residence programme in late 2022, which together they co-sponsor. This enables a French screen artist in film, animation, or VFX to be based at the Miramar Creative Centre for up to six weeks for the purposes of research, collaboration, and knowledge exchange.
During Shih-Yen's residency period, the inaugural ANFX Film Festival will be held. The festival is a celebration of animated short films and short films featuring visual effects. The event will include a special screening of French animated shorts curated by Shih-Yen. Additionally, there will be two other screenings and one panel talk, all held at the University’s Memorial Theatre.
