On Saturday morning we received the very sad news that Dr Seamus Hogan passed away suddenly on Friday. He died in hospital in Christchurch after being admitted following a collapse.

Seamus joined the School of Government earlier this year after many years as an academic at the University of Canterbury, where he had a great reputation as an outstanding and highly respected teacher and colleague.

He was recently appointed President of the New Zealand Association of Economists (NZAE), following several years as a member of the NZAE Council.

Seamus quickly become a highly valued and respected member of the School of Government. In his first trimester, he had already made a very positive impact with both undergraduate and master's students in his enthusiastic teaching of public economics.

Along with Professor John Creedy, Seamus recently represented Victoria Business School as a judge for the Treasury Schools Challenge, and did a wonderful job.

A highly knowledgeable sports performance analyst, most specifically in the field of cricket and rugby, he was also accomplished violinist. Seamus is survived by his wife, Sarah, and his three children.
