Profile

Imogen is a researcher, tutor, lab manager, and PhD candidate whose research focuses on wellbeing amongst tattooed individuals in Aotearoa. Imogen had noticed tattooed people were often misrepresented in research, with scholarship often not listening to 'tattooed voices’. Tattoo research in Aotearoa is relatively scarce, and Imogen believed it was time to investigate the potentially ‘uncomfortable’ aspects of tattoos. Their PhD aims to uncover the range of motivations behind tattoos, involving how tattoos may indicate wellbeing and mental wellness. Imogen also examines whether there is a motivational intersection behind tattoos and other forms of deliberate bodily damage, such as non-suicidal self-injury. Imogen uses a mixed-methods approach to her research, involving both quantitative and qualitative analysis.
