Educational chatbots (ECs) are chatbots designed for pedagogical purposes and are viewed as an Internet of Things (IoT) interface that could revolutionize teaching and learning. These chatbots are strategized to provide personalized learning through the concept of a virtual assistant that replicates humanized conversation. However, if viewed from the educational context, most models for the design and development of chatbots reflect on AI and back-end perspective that requires coding skills. Nevertheless, mobile instant messaging (MIM) platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram and Facebook provide MIM-based chatbots that eliminates the need for coding. Furthermore, due to the pedagogical nature of ECs, implementing design strategies or principles to achieve learning goals is of utmost importance. Therefore, four fundamental design strategies were deemed critical for EC design, that the researcher proposed which are: Reliability, interpersonal communication, Pedagogy, and Experience (RiPE). Based on the EC design and development, the study investigated the effect of ECs to facilitate team-based projects for a design course on learning outcomes. Based on a mixed-method quasi-experimental approach, ECs were found to improve learning performance and teamwork with a practical impact but not affective-motivational outcomes.
