School-wide adoption of flipped learning: instructional reform, teacher education and students’ learning

Technology-enhanced learning requires a higher level of thinking from students. The transition from cognition to metacognition doesn’t happen automatically. Teacher mediation is needed. In this presentation the adapted flipped learning AB class model enables teachers to transform from a role of content delivery to a role of thinking facilitator through mediation. Active teacher mediation could be an effective way to overcome varying readiness in an AB class model by engaging all students in an interactive learning environment. The case study was conducted for half a semester on three different subjects in an AB class model learning environment to explore a unique phenomenon of teacher mediation in terms of when (top-down approach by leadership management), what (intervention), how (designed instructional talk) and why (facilitate their metacognitive thinking). The insights gained from the case can develop additional ideas (a talk pattern) that might be explored in future studies and other cases.

Biography

Lina Guo is a senior tutor at the School of Information and Management, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. She supports teaching and learning in INFO101, INFO234 and INFO 388. Lina will defend her PhD in educational technology (Waikato University) on October 6. Her research interests include utilizing technology to enhance engagement in teaching and learning, school digital transformation, flipped learning, designing professional workshops, teacher agency, cognitive and metacognitive development, design-based methodology, and conversation analysis. Her research has appeared in journals such as E-learning and digital media Journal, Asia Pacific of Teacher Education, Asia Pacific Education Review, and Social Science.
