The workshop, hosted at the Pipitea campus, considered how institutions and groups with digital heritage collections can reach out and connect with their communities through technology.

The School's Visiting Scholar, Dr Elizabeth Tait of Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, facilitated the workshop and her colleague Professor Peter Reid joined via the online ZOOM platform to share their experiences of using digital technologies to broaden engagement with cultural heritage in Scotland.

School of Information Management’s Dr Chern Li Liew and Professor Anne Goulding concluded the workshop by focusing on developments, opportunities and challenges in the New Zealand context.

They were joined by Gavin Mitchell of New Zealand Micrographics Service who shared his experiences of working with organisations across different sectors to digitise, surface and enrich the use of cultural heritage collections.

During the breakout sessions, participants explored different approaches to the digitisation of heritage items and discussed the technology tools they used to deliver heritage to a wider audience and encourage participation from local communities.

Social media applications, geo-tagging, laser scanning and augmented reality were just some of the ways highlighted to help people connect more meaningfully to digital material.

Professor Goulding said the workshop provided a great opportunity for participants to "share ideas on good practice for enhancing and showcasing historical collections, and making New Zealand’s digital culture and heritage objects and resources more accessible for the people of Aotearoa and those overseas".
