Pasifika Student Success

We offer supportive environments and services for every stage of your journey, whether you’re a new student or in your final year.

The Pasifika Student Success team is the University ‘āiga (family), which provides students with the necessary tools to navigate their transition into tertiary study.  The team fosters learning and teaching communities in an environment that has Pasifika cultures at its core, is welcoming and safe, and is focused on academic excellence, personal growth, and wellbeing. The team are continuing to engage with Pasifika students on campus and via various online platforms, such as Zoom, email, phone, Facebook and Instagram.

Events

All events scheduled for the rest of the Trimester will either be on campus or should we move to Alert Level 3, then will be online. All students will be kept informed on a weekly basis.

Meet the team

Manager, Pasifika Student Success

Fa'amatuainu Aaron Nonoa is of Samoan and Niuean descent and a graduate of both Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and the University of Waikato. His role is to manage and lead the operations of the Pasifika Student Success team.   Fa'amatuainu is the primary contact for Faculty Managers and Associate Deans, School Managers and Course Coordinators liaise directly with the relevant PSS team member. Fa'amatuainu’s main challenge to students is to put in hard work over the next 3 to 5 years as this will have a major influence on the rest of their lives.

Fa'amatuainu is currently managing the pastoral and holistic support for all Pasifika students at the Faculty of Law.

Pasifika Outreach Adviser

Ofisa Taeao is a proud Samoan, born and raised in Lower Hutt, Wellington. His parents are from the villages of Falevao, Saleaula, Falealupo, Falelatai and Saipipi. Ofisa has a Bachelor of Music and a GDip Teaching (Secondary) as well as up to date knowledge of the senior secondary school sector, NCEA and university preparedness. Ofisa leads our Pasifika Outreach programme to build relationships predominantly with schools in the greater Wellington region that have high Pasifika student populations and have engaged positively with the Outreach programme in the past.

I am Tongan from the Villages of Mataika Vava'u, Falehau Niutoputapu, Utulei Vava'u, Fatai Tongatapu, Oloua Vava'u, Holopeka & Ha'apai.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Commerce. In my role as the Pasifika Engagement Advisor for the Wellington School of Business and Government, I want to support our Pasifika students and help them reach their goal of graduating.

Fabie is the daughter of Auva’a and Fara Masoe from the villages of Asau, Safune, Salelologa, Sa’anapu and Alafua, Samoa and completed her Bachelor of Arts (Samoan Studies, Pacific Studies and Cultural Anthropology) at Victoria University of Wellington. She is a strong advocate for Pasifika success and is committed to increasing and improving Pasifika engagement, retention and completion.

Fabie manages the pastoral and holistic support for all Pasifika students at the Wellington Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Wellington Faculty of Education.

Stariana is of Samoan and Cook Island descent, born and raised in Porirua. Her parents are from the villages of Tufulele, Vaiusu, Luatuanu’u, Falelatai, Samoa and Mauke, Cook Islands. Stariana has completed a Bachelor of Arts in Pacific Studies and Education and a Master of Education at Victoria University of Wellington. In her role, she wishes to provide Pasifika students with the tools to ensure that they are well supported throughout their university journey, encouraging an environment that is inclusive of all Pasifika identities.

Stariana manages the pastoral and holistic support for 1st and 2nd year Pasifika students at the Wellington Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Wellington Faculty of Education.

Melemafi (Mele) is Tongan from the villages of Faleloa, Ha'apai and Kanokupolu, Tongatapu. She has a BBmedSc (Human Genetics) and a Master of Clinical Immunology. In her role as the student engagement adviser, she wants to support Pasifika students studying Science, Health or Engineering the best she can, helping them to strive for success.
