About us
Led by our Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Pasifika), the dedicated Pasifika team aims to grow representation and provide support for staff and students.
The Office of the Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Pasifika)
The role of Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Pasifika), held by Associate Professor Hon Luamanuvao Dame Winnie Laban DNZM since its inception in 2010 has been unique in New Zealand universities. The role was established to provide strategic direction and support for Pasifika students and staff.
The Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Pasifika) is supported directly by Senior Adviser, Pelesa Semu to promote Pasifika student enrolment, retention and completion of programmes and build strong relationships across the University. We also focus on the University's Pasifika identity; increasing the number of Pasifika staff and ensuring they are well supported; as well as encouraging research into Pasifika issues within New Zealand and the Pacific region.
In 2019, the Office welcomed the Pasifika Student Success Team who help our Pasifika students navigate their transition into tertiary study with a focus on academic excellence, personal growth and well-being.
The Pasifika team take pride in celebrating the academic success of Pasifika students. This includes hosting graduation celebrations for Pasifika students each May and December and welcoming our new students at the start of each year at the University's Pasifika Orientation.
