Victoria University of Wellington’s training and development opportunities for academic staff. Some events are open to the wider tertiary education community.
Get training and qualifications
The University offers a Master’s level programme of postgraduate courses and qualifications for tertiary teachers and teaching support staff.
The programme is called Postgraduate Higher Education Learning and Teaching (PHELT).
Designed with busy academics in mind, PHELT has graduated levels of achievement. Each qualification is a stepping stone to the next.
University staff members might be able to study for free.
Connect with other professionals
Twice a year, the University’s Centre for Academic Development hosts Ako Victoria events. These are opportunities for our University teaching staff to network and talk learning and teaching.
Occasionally, the University hosts academics visiting New Zealand. They make presentations or lead seminars about their learning and teaching research. These events will be advertised in advance.
Support for our University staff
Academic staff members interested in improving their learning and teaching practice or developing professionally can talk to the team at the University’s Centre for Academic Development (CAD).
They can give practical advice and point teachers towards the right training or resources.
Staff can log in to the staff intranet to find out more about learning and teaching professional development services and opportunities at the University. They include:
- tutor training
- orientation programmes for new academic staff
- teaching portfolios
- academic mentoring scheme
- VicTeach—monthly seminars for sharing learning and teaching best practice.
