Where the Internet started in New Zealand

The School of Engineering and Computer Science is where student Nat Torkington developed New Zealand's first website.

Professor John Hine was instrumental in negotiating with NASA to get our first undersea cable—enabling New Zealand to beat Australia to be the first country in the Pacific region with a direct connection to the US Internet.

The inter-university network that Professor Hine developed evolved into the backbone of the New Zealand Internet until it was replaced by commercially available services from 1996.

Cutting-edge facilities

The School houses state-of-the-art equipment and laboratories in the Alan MacDiarmid and Cotton Buildings on Kelburn campus.

These facilities enable our students to develop practical skills across many different areas, such as robotics, wireless networking, and artificial intelligence. The modern  university campus provides many attractive places for students to study and exchange ideas.
