Digital Innovation for the Common Good - A Compassionate Approach

When: 9:00am -10:30:am Thursday 23 November 2023

Where: RHMZ01  or   https://vuw.zoom.us/my/simsim

This talk is for IS scholars eager to contribute meaningfully to our digital future. I aim to kickstart a conversation on the interplay between digital innovation and its societal implications. As digital technologies continue to transform our world, it becomes critical to acknowledge their dual nature, capable of both strengthening our social fabric and ripping it apart. This talk will delve into how compassionate information systems (IS) scholarship can serve as an approach for fostering digital innovation for the common good of all stakeholders. I will explore the ethical, social, economic, and environmental dimensions of digital innovation, emphasising the integration of reason and emotion in creating systems that not only perform efficiently but also promote user welfare and societal good. The session will address the paradox of economic impacts, advocate for inclusive social progress, and emphasise the necessity of upholding ethical standards in the digital realm. Furthermore, we'll discuss environmental stewardship's vital role in ensuring digital innovation aligns with sustainable practices. My goal is to let you leave with a heightened understanding and actionable insights on steering future IS research toward creating a just, sustainable, and equitable digital society.
