    In 2023, Dr Maria Bargh (Te Arawa, Ngāti Awa) was promoted to Professor of Politics and Māori Studies at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, becoming the first wāhine Māori to achieve this position. This achievement builds on a lifetime of work aimed at bringing together politics and a Māori approach, whether that be to elections, resource management, or other aspects of political life.
