Other study options
We offer a Certificate in Deaf Studies, a Certificate of Proficiency, a Certificate of Proficiency in English and a Diploma in Māoritanga.
Certificate in Deaf Studies (Teaching NZSL)
The Certificate in Deaf Studies (Teaching NZSL) is a modular programme for teachers and intending teachers of New Zealand Sign Language who are already fluent signers. The programme consists of five courses taught in intensive one-week modules, and a teaching practicum course which is taken in your home area. Lectures and class work are conducted in NZSL.
Certificate of Proficiency
The Certificate of Proficiency allows you to enrol in any single course at Victoria University of Wellington, giving you the chance to pursue your passion, gain new skills or supplement your experience. Select the course or courses that interest you and accrue points that can be counted towards a degree at a later date.
Certificate of Proficiency in English
The Certificate of Proficiency in English is offered by the English Language Institute in the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies. The English Proficiency Programme provides intensive English language courses for students who have an intermediate or advanced knowledge of English.
Tohu Māoritanga (Diploma in Māoritanga)
The Diploma in Māoritanga (Tohu Māoritanga) provides a foundation in three areas: Māori language; culture and society; and tikanga (customs and practice).
The Tohu Māoritanga is designed as an introduction to university-level study in the area of Māori Studies. University Entrance is not required. So, if you left school before doing exams, or have been away from formal classes and are unsure if you can handle studying again, the Tohu Māoritanga offers you the opportunity to try out university study.
The Tohu Māoritanga can be studied on its own as a valuable introduction to taha Māori, or, when completed, may permit you to cross-credit up to 60 points towards a Bachelor of Arts degree at Victoria University of Wellington.
Students must complete the Tohu Māoritanga successfully before enrolment in a Bachelor’s degree programme will be permitted.
