Japan’s strategic choices in a dangerous world

In his talk, Japan’s Strategic Choices in a Dangerous World, Professor Nakayama will discuss the challenges confronting Japanese foreign and security policymakers as North Korea threatens to use its nuclear weapons, China asserts itself more aggressively on the international stage, and questions are raised about the future of American leadership.

“It’s exciting for Victoria to host an academic with the international reputation of Professor Nakayama,” says Associate Professor David Capie, Director of Victoria’s Centre for Strategic Studies.

“Professor Nakayama is one of the world’s foremost experts in Japan’s foreign relations and is perfectly placed to comment on the increasingly tense situation in northeast Asia. Under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Japan has taken a number of steps to reform its national security policy, including 'doubling down' on its alliance with the United States. But questions remain about how Japan should best safeguard its national interests in the future,” says Dr Capie.

“We are honoured to host Professor Nakayama as the 2017 Sir Howard Kippenberger Chair in Strategic Studies at Victoria University. He’s an outstanding public speaker and a world class scholar.”

Prof Nakayama is a Professor of American Politics and Foreign Policy at Japan’s Keio University, and an Adjunct Fellow at the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA). Previously he was a Special Correspondent for the Washington Post at the Far Eastern Bureau; Special Assistant at the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations in New York; Senior Research Fellow at The Japan Institute of International Affairs; Associate Professor at Tsuda College; and Professor at Aoyama Gakuin University). He has also been a Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington.

He has written two books and numerous articles on American politics, foreign policy and international relations. He appears regularly on Japanese media and writes a monthly column for Japan News. He received the Nakasone Yasuhiro Award (Incentive Award) in 2014.
