2026 Conference

More than ever before, it's urgent we understand and apply history's lessons. But we can't implement what we learn from the past until we create a practical framework for the future: equitable building blocks for what it means to live and thrive in a just society. We need to re-imagine how an Aotearoa with a future would look, and we need these discussions to be participatory and accessible for all. That's what our upcoming three-day conference, Kia Tika, Kia Pono: For a Just Society 2026 (16–18 April), is about. And you can help.

Kia Tika, Kia Pono: For a Just Society 2026 features talks about advancing economic sovereignty, the relationship between colonialism and capitalism amid rising inequality, and recalibrating our national identity to counter social division. We'll discuss the ethics and politics of reclamation (tuupuna legacies and mokopuna decisions), moving beyond performative partnership in regard to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, respect for unions and workers, the implications of deregulation in Aotearoa’s transport sector, and examining how urban design and planning perpetuate—or disrupt—inequality and inequity. We'll also look at creating the conditions to move to an economy that centers human and planetary needs, and how a path to equitable democracy can be found through reorienting around Te Tiriti communication models. We finish with a summing up by Bernard Hickey, journalist, The Kaka Project.

We at the Stout Research Centre for New Zealand Studies at Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington ask for your support to bring lower income participants into these critical, developing discussions about exactly what an equitable and just society looks like, in real terms.

You can help us include people who can't afford to attend. We hope to raise enough funds to give out twenty free registrations, for student scholarships or hardship attendance—registrations that include all sessions, including food, across the three-day conference. To that end, our goal is $5000 (NZD) for twenty attendees. We hope you'll consider making a donation to help us make the conference inclusive for all—any funds exceeding our goal will allow us to open up more scholarships and hardship registrations.

You do not need to be in Aotearoa New Zealand to make a donation, and it's tax-deductible in NZ, the UK (Gift Aid), US, Canada, and Hong Kong.
