Seminar Series—Between the Lines: Recent books in New Zealand studies
20 May 2026
The Stout Centre’s seminar series highlighting recent books continues with Elizabeth Cox’s 'Mr Ward’s Map'. In 1891, surveyor Thomas Ward produced a map of Wellington in remarkable detail, which was regularly updated over the following decade.
Join us for a conversation between the author, Elizabeth Cox, and scholars on historical Wellington—author Violet Blue and archivist Adrian Humphris. Together they will explore the byways behind this historical artifact and the stories it charts about Wellington at the turn of the twentieth century. This publication has just won the best illustrated non-fiction award at the Ockham Book Awards.
