Why Study at the Stout Research Centre

Sandra Thomas

I chose the Stout Research Centre for New Zealand Studies for my PhD studies for its unique academic environment and its embrace of multi-disciplinary research.  My bespoke project, part history, part law, found its natural home among the diverse inquiries into the development and nature of New Zealand’s identity which take place in the Stout Research Centre.  It was stimulating, and motivating, to share space with a range of scholars whose work I admired and whose support and expertise made an invaluable contribution to the completion of my thesis.

The Stout Research Centre for NZ Studies is a haven of academic excellence. During my association with the Stout as a PhD student I have felt privileged to be nurtured on my journey by seasoned academics, highly esteemed both in NZ and abroad. Not only do they set high standards for graduate students by their prolific publishing, they encourage a spirit of collegiality and interdisciplinarity. It has been a wonderful experience to be part of the Stout Research Centre, surrounded by people engaged in quality research work and supportive staff.

I was lucky enough to have been awarded a scholarship to complete a Ph.D at the Stout Centre for NZ Studies. It provided me with opportunities to present research, publish and allowed me to follow several career paths in both academia and the Waitangi Tribunal/Treaty settlement process. I was surrounded by eminent scholars from multiple fields of expertise who guided me through my studies. In addition to the academic guidance, the Stout staff were also incredibly supportive. I felt that being located at the Stout gave me a sense of place and purpose on campus.
