There are a number of scholarships, prizes and awards available to students studying at Victoria University of Wellington. For more information please refer to the Scholarships page on the University website.

There are specific awards and scholarships offered to Māori Studies students. Some of these are listed below.

Awards

Ruka Broughton Memorial Award

Awarded annually to a top student. The object of the award is to recognise and encourage students to pursue with excellence, determination, and proficiency any of the BA majors taught through Te Kawa a Māui. The final selection for the award will be made by the staff of Te Kawa a Māui, and presented at the Te Tini a Rehua ceremony.

Wiremu Parker Memorial Award

Awarded annually to a student enrolled in any of the BA majors taught through Te Kawa a Māui or to a student who has completed the Tohu Māoritanga. The award recognises notable academic achievement and contributions to the cultural life of Te Herenga Waka whānau. Students must also embody the values of Te Tumu Herenga Waka: whanaungatanga, mātauranga, manaakitanga, and tuakana/teina. The final selection for the award will be made by the staff of Te Kawa a Māui, and presented at the Te Tini a Rehua ceremony.

Te Herenga Waka—Hardship Fund Equity Grants

These grants are to encourage students who are facing financial hardship to continue in their studies at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. Apply here.

Scholarships

Taihonoa Scholarships

Taihonoa is Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington’s Māori strategic partnership programme. We have relationships with over 70 Māori and public sector He Herenga Tangata Taihonoa partners including iwi, land trusts, consultancy businesses, and government departments.

Macarthy Trust Scholarship in Māori Studies

This scholarship is open to students who have completed an undergraduate degree in Māori Studies as their major subject and continuing on to postgraduate studies.

Philippa and Morvyn Williams Scholarships for Māori and/or Māori Studies

The purpose of these scholarships is to:

  1. encourage study and research which will sustain and promote guardianship by Māori of their cultural heritage, and particularly their language;
  2. support and affirm Māori women in their role as teachers and leaders of future generations by encouraging them to proceed to graduate work.

One or two scholarships will be offered in any one year for female Māori students pursuing postgraduate study at Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington. For more information see the Philippa and Morvyn Williams Scholarships page on the University website.

Wellington Guaranteed Master's by Thesis Fees Scholarships

The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage postgraduate research by guaranteed paid fees to Māori and Pasifika students who will begin a full time, research-focused Master's degree.

Guaranteed Māori and Pasifika Doctoral Scholarships

The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage Māori and Pasifika postgraduate students into doctoral study.

Māori Education Trust Scholarships

The purpose of these scholarships is to encourage Māori into tertiary education through the payments of grants and scholarships. The Māori Education Foundation was established under the Māori Education Foundation Act 1961, the 1961 Act was superseded by The Māori Education Trust Deed in 1993 when Toitū Kaupapa Māori Mātauranga (Māori Education Trust) came into being.
