Growing CSS cooperation with Poland

Professorial Fellow Professor Rabel represented CSS in an international research project led by the University of Warsaw.

There has been growing momentum in engagement between the Centre of Strategic Studies and Polish think tanks, universities and government agencies.

Professorial Fellow Professor Rabel has recently been in Poland representing CSS in an international research project led by the University of Warsaw on Global South responses to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He has already published an article related to the project in International Affairs, a leading journal in International Relations.

While in Poland, Emeritus Professor Rabel led a roundtable discussion on New Zealand and the Indo-Pacific at the Polish Institute of International Affairs (PISM). Participants included analysts from the Institute, Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs representatives and scholars from Polish universities.  CSS Director Professor David Capie gave a presentation at PISM in 2024. These sessions have involved fruitful exchanges of views on evolving geo-political challenges in the Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic regions.

Discussions are under way about a possible Memorandum of Understanding to sustain cooperation between the two think tanks.

Professor Rabel completed his time in Warsaw with a presentation at the Polish Diplomatic Academy, the training arm of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As well as diplomatic trainees, representatives of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the New Zealand Embassy in Warsaw were in attendance.
