The three schools in Te Pukenga Wai offer research-based qualifications, including PhD, professional doctorates, and thesis-based Master’s degrees.

Our research combines foundational discovery with real-world impact—improving outcomes for individuals, whānau, and communities, while deepening understanding of human behaviour, thought, and experience.

As a postgraduate researcher, you’ll join a vibrant, interdisciplinary culture, working alongside experienced academics and in partnership with communities and professionals to build knowledge and create meaningful change.

PhD

The PhD thesis is a major piece of original research that demonstrates the candidate’s ability to carry out independent research and constitutes a significant and original contribution to knowledge or understanding of a field of study. As well as intelligence and an aptitude for research, the degree requires considerable dedication and tenacity.

Applications for PhD study can be made at any time, but are considered three times a year: 1 March, 1 July and 1 November. You’ll apply via the Faculty of Graduate Research.

About the PhD

Professional doctorates

Professional doctorates are available for emerging leaders in the education and health sectors. Professional doctorates in Education, Health, Midwifery, and Nursing are restricted to New Zealand citizens or permanent residents, and build on a significant period of professional practice.

Applications for the professional doctorates are considered once a year—the deadline is 1 November. You’ll apply via the Faculty of Graduate Research.

Master’s by thesis

Also known as a Master’s by research degree, a Master’s by thesis is an opportunity for independent study with no timetabled classes. You’ll work with a supervisor to do original research and present it as a thesis.
