Partnership with Pūhoro STEMM

Rangatahi Māori will be supported into science, technology, engineering, maths, and Mātauranga Māori through a new collaboration with Pūhoro STEMM.

Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington has launched a partnership with Pūhoro STEMM, reflecting a shared commitment to growing Māori participation and success in STEMM subjects, and the long-term opportunities this creates for rangatahi and the wider sector.

Pūhoro STEMM is initially delivering its programme at eight schools:

  • Hutt Valley High School
  • Kuranui College
  • Mana College
  • Newlands College
  • Tawa College
  • Te Kura Māori o Porirua
  • Wairarapa College
  • Wainuiomata High School

Te Herenga Waka supports the delivery of the programme in Te Upoko-o-Te-Ika Greater Wellington, helping in the strengthening pathways into tertiary education and providing on-campus premises for kaiako.

This expansion creates pathways and opportunities for rangatahi in Te Upoko-o-Te-Ika, a region with significant scale and potential. There is strong talent across Wellington and Wairarapa, and our role is to unlock it through access, exposure, and connections to education, industry, and future STEMM careers for diverse young people and communities.

Kemp Reweti

Manahautū (Chief Executive)

We are really excited to be joining the Pūhoro whānau. The opportunity this brings Te Herenga Waka includes supporting Māori students to expand their opportunities and the enormous potential for more Māori students to bring their perspectives to STEMM disciplines, which enriches opportunities for all.

Dean of Te Wāhanga a Manaia—Faculty of Science and Engineering
