Sir John Anderson Memorial Scholarship
History
This scholarship is intended to honour Sir John’s legacy of commitment to supporting the next generation and giving back to the community. It also provides an opportunity for the successful candidate to receive mentoring and coaching from professionals working in New Zealand’s financial markets.
ANZ Bank NZ Limited is pleased to offer the Sir John Anderson Memorial Scholarship on behalf of the Bank and Sir John’s family, to honour and celebrate Sir John’s values and the professional contribution he made to New Zealand’s financial markets and the wider business community.
Sir John Anderson was awarded the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal, and he was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to business management, banking and the community in the 1995 New Year Honours.
Sir John helped form the merchant bank South Pacific Merchant Finance (Southpac) in 1972. He became Chief Executive of Southpac in 1979 and, within a year of Southpac merging with the National Bank of New Zealand in 1988, he became Chief Executive of the National Bank. After ANZ's acquisition of the National Bank, he was responsible for ANZ's New Zealand businesses until his retirement at the end of 2005. Sir John was a founding member of the predecessor organisations which formed the Institute of Finance Professionals in NZ (INFINZ) and was the professional body’s first recipient of the INFINZ Distinguished Fellowship.
This scholarship recognises Sir John’s passion for fostering the development of his younger colleagues and recognises his close association with Victoria University of Wellington. Sir John was a graduate of Victoria University of Wellington, and in 2012 was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Commerce.
Description
This Scholarship is open to students entering their first year of study and majoring in a degree programme at the Wellington School of Business and Government. The scholarship is intended to support emerging leaders who have chosen a career in commerce and are committed to undergraduate study at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington.
Who is eligible?
- Applicants must by New Zealand citizens, Permanent Residents or hold a residence class visa to remain in New Zealand
- Applicants must have achieved an NCEA Level 2 Certificate endorsed with Merit (or the equivalent in another qualification)
- Applicants must be entering their first year of study and intending to enrol full time in a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Wellington School of Business and Government.
- Preference will be given to students who are majoring in a discipline within the School of Accounting and Commercial Law, or related disciplines within the Commerce Faculty.
- Applicants intending to enrol into a joint degree with a non-commerce subject are also eligible to apply.

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation
- A personal statement outlining how they meet the criteria for this scholarship
- A CV of the applicant's prior education, employment and interests
- A reference from their school’s head of commerce or another suitable teacher (to be requested via the online application)
Selection process
Applicants will be shortlisted by the Head of School of Accounting and Commercial Law (or their nominee), and relevant academics, in consultation with the donor and Sir John’s family. Applicants may be invited to interview.
Additional information
Recipients of this scholarship are eligible to receive this scholarship for three years of their degree through the Wellington School of Business and Government. To retain this scholarship each year, applicants must achieve satisfactory academic progress and will be informed if they are eligible for this scholarship each year.
This scholarship will be $6,000 per annum in the form of an equal monthly stipend. The recipient of this scholarship will also receive:
- An offer of mentorship from ANZ Bank NZ
- An offer of summer internships at ANZ Bank NZ, at the end of the first and second year of study
- Membership in INFINZ’s Young Financial Professional Programme where they will be eligible to attend all YFP events
- Attendance at the annual INFINZ conference, including flights and accommodation as required
- An offer to participate in ANZ Bank NZ’s graduate recruitment process
Recipients of this scholarship are expected to a write a letter of thanks to the donor within one month of receiving this scholarship. Recipients must also provide an end of year report after each year of study in order to maintain the scholarship.
Regulations and conditions
- A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
- All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
- The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
- The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
- Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
- Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
- At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
