Description

This scholarship is offered by Kahui Legal and Taihonoa to offset the costs of fees or other course related costs for a student who has proven academic excellence in their first year.

History

This scholarship is funded by Kahui Legal and Taihonoa for the purpose of encouraging and financially supporting the successful pursuit of tertiary qualifications and leadership development for Kahui Legal.

Who is eligible?

  • Applicants need to be an enrolled full-time student of Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington.

  • Preference will be given to students who are enrolled in te reo Māori, tikanga Māori or papers that are inclusive of a mātauranga Māori world view.

Application process

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation

  • Provide a personal statement introducing themselves to the Grants Committee and to include a commitment by the student to ‘give back’ to the Kahui Legal in the future, and to state how they might do that.
  • Provide a written and signed reference (from non-direct whanau sources) that speaks to the students’ deservedness for the scholarship. The referee will need to state their relationship with the student (for example former school dean or teacher, sports coaches, church or cultural/marae/iwi leaders, employee) and should outline the student’s skills, talents or personal qualities that they have observed (to be requested via the online application),

Selection process

The scholarship will be decided upon by Kahui Legal and the Pouhere of the Office of DVC (Māori) or a nominee.

Additional information

The scholarship is valued at $5,000 and will be a contribution to fees or other course related costs. This is a one year tenure and successful students are eligible to reapply.

The scholarship will be paid in 1 instalment and cease, should a student end full-time study. Scholarship recipients are strongly encouraged to contribute positively to the University marae, by volunteering some time to support the role and function of supporting the Māori community at Te Herenga Waka.

Regulations and conditions

  2. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  3. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  4. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
  5. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  6. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  7. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
