Description

These scholarships are targeted to deserving New Zealand School of Music students who are in financial need. Successful applicants will be second and third year students in an undergraduate degree or any year of a post graduate degree offered by the New Zealand School of Music who have demonstrated a commitment and contribution to music within and beyond the University community.

History and purpose

The FCT was founded in 1987 by Peter and Rae Fehl with the principal objectives being the promotion of the arts, the relief of poverty, advancement of education and other charitable purposes that are beneficial to the community.

These scholarships were established by the Fehl Charitable Trust through the Victoria University of Wellington Foundation to support deserving New Zealand School of Music undergraduate students who are facing financial hardship.

Who is eligible?

    To be eligible, applicants must:

  • be currently enrolled full-time in their second or third year of an undergraduate degree or any year of a post graduate degree at the New Zealand School of Music.
  • be experiencing financial hardship.
  • be eligible for domestic fees status (i.e., be a NZ Citizen, NZ Permanent Resident, NZ Resident Class Visa holder, or Australian Citizen/Permanent Resident domiciled in NZ).

Selection criteria

  • The scholarship is open to music students who have demonstrated a commitment and contribution to music within and beyond the university community.
  • Recipients are selected on the basis of financial need, application and aptitude for studying music.
  • Previous applicants may apply in subsequent years, including applicants who have previously been successful.

Application process

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation

  • Complete the financial section of the online application, which includes:
    • The applicants most recent bank statement showing the balance of all available accounts.
    • The applicants most recent bank statement showing the last two weeks of transactions in the account where income is received and rent/board is paid from).
  • Upload a personal statement to share their story, to explain what music means to them and their aims for a career in music and include details of financial hardship/need at a minimum covering:
    • Their journey in music including any relevant background context.
    • Why completing a degree in music is important and their future ambitions (including long term goals).
    • Any financial need, including what the funds would be used for, if successful in gaining a Scholarship.
    • Community engagement.
    • Any other information that may be of relevance to the Selection Panel.
  • Applicants other than those who have completed all their study at Victoria University of Wellington, must include a certified copy of their academic reports from other institutions

Selection process

  • Selection will be made by representative of the New Zealand School of Music in consultation with at least one Trustee from the Fehl Charitable Trust.
  • The Selection Panel may refrain from offering a scholarship if it finds no applicant of sufficient merit.
  • The Selection Panel’s decisions are final and no further correspondence will be entered into following the selection meeting.

Additional information

  • Recipients must write a letter of thanks to the donor to show their appreciation.
  • The recipient will be expected to demonstrate engagement and contribute to the community and environment of the New Zealand School of Music. This may include but is not limited to, participation in ensembles, presentations, or performances at NZSM or University events.

Conditions

  1. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  2. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  3. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
  4. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  5. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  6. The Scholarships Committee, in consultation with the Donor, may, from time to time, vary these regulations.
