Dr Margaret L Bailey Award (Mathematics)
$1,000 (subject to available funds)
No application required
The prize is offered to a female student wishing to pursue postgraduate study within the School of Mathematics and Statistics. Eligible students must have recently completed a Bachelor of Science, majoring in mathematics or statistics.
Selection of the student will be based on the demonstration of interest and promise in the subject of mathematics or statistics, and financial necessity.
Historically, only a small fraction of science degrees were awarded to women, but in recent decades women's overall participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields has steadily increased. Today, women earn half of all bachelor's degrees in science. Women's involvement in advanced study and careers in STEM fields continues to grow. However, women are still underrepresented in postgraduate and post-doctoral positions.
Victoria University of Wellington is dedicated to fostering a community of learning that reflects New Zealand's diverse society. Through a generous gift from Dr Margaret L Bailey via the Victoria University of Wellington Foundation, we are delighted to offer this award to a female student wishing to pursue postgraduate study within the School of Mathematics and Statistics.
The purpose of this award is to provide financial support for a female student who has recently completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in mathematics or statistics, wishing to pursue postgraduate study (at honours level) within the School of Mathematics and Statistics. Preference will be given to those experiencing financial hardship.
A shortlist of eligible recipients will be drawn up on the basis of their academic transcript and indication of financial need. The Head of School and two appointed representatives will decide the awardee.
Recipients will be asked write a thank you letter, which will be forwarded appropriately.
