Value:

$250 (subject to available funds)

Closing date:

No application required

Eligibility

The purpose of the award is to recognise outstanding performance in 300 level physics, with particular note of laboratory work, by a student majoring in physics or applied physics, as established by performance in the first trimester of each academic year.

Information

Pablo Etchegoin was Professor of Nanotechnology within the Physics grouping of the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences (SCPS) until he passed away in 2013 after a long and brave fight with cancer. Pablo was very well known internationally as an outstanding experimentalist, specialising in Raman spectroscopy and particularly surface enhancement effects. An experimentalist by nature, Pablo was also a dedicated teacher of Physics, and made major contributions to the design and development of experiments in the 300 level physics teaching laboratories.

This prize was initiated and funded by his colleagues in physics via the Victoria University Foundation in celebration of his life, and in particular to commemorate his teaching work in SCPS, particularly in the teaching labs. The fund was supported by other colleagues and friends in SCPS, and also by his wider circle of professional and personal contacts.

The prize is awarded on the recommendation of the Head of School of Chemical and Physical Sciences (or their delegate), the Physics Programme Director, and the 300-level Physics Coordinator. The prize will be awarded at the end of Trimester 1.

Recipients are encouraged to use the prize to purchase textbooks or software which will assist the recipient with studies in Physics in the second semester and beyond.

Recipients will be asked to write a letter of thanks, which will be forwarded appropriately.
