About this course

This is a core course in the first year of the Bachelor of Design Innovation. The course introduces students to, and develops their fluency in, visualisation methods specific to the representation of design elements and images, and how they potentially change over time. These are investigated through hand drawing and several digital techniques than can include photography, motion graphics, animation and video.

DSDN101 is an on-campus only course and is not available for distance study. This means all class sessions will be delivered in person at our Te Aro Campus.

Course learning objectives

Students who pass this course should be able to:

  1. Assess a body of design knowledge and language that situates your design thinking and design process, within various modes of image making and visualisation.

  2. Demonstrate proficientuse of the software and design strategies introduced in the course.

  3. Demonstrate proficiency in a range of visual methods to develop and communicate design ideas.

  4. Use a range of visual methods to communicate an appreciation of historical, cultural and contemporary design approaches.

How this course is taught

DSDN101 Lectures, studios and tutorials require in-person attendance. Lecture recordings will be made available in Nuku for subsequent revision.

Studio Culture Policy
The design studio operates at three levels of instruction: the whole class, the tutorial group, and the individual. The studio thus involves both collective and individual participation from individuals in the group. Tutors will be in the studio at all scheduled times undertaking group and individual instruction and reviewing project work. On-going discussion will be critical to the development of your design work. The Course Coordinator will be available during tutorial times and scheduled office hours to answer any specific questions you might have.

For the studio to operate effectively, students are expected to arrive on time, to be present for the whole studio session (unless there are reasons why they cannot), and to actively participate in group and one-to-one discussions with your Tutor.

It is also expected that students will bring to the studio sessions the appropriate equipment and supplies needed to work productively on the design projects and to complete this project work on time.

Students are expected to maintain an acceptable level of cleanliness and tidiness in the studio as outlined in the Studio Culture Policy, which is displayed in all studios. View the policy online at https://www.wgtn.ac.nz/wfadi/student-administration/current-students.
