Peter Wilkes
Kia ora,
My name is Peter and I am here at Mauri Ora as part of my training practicum within the Master of Counselling programme at the University of Waikato. I have experience counselling in both secondary school and crisis helpline contexts, and I am particularly passionate about working with students.
In my practice I draw primarily from narrative therapy, and integrate aspects of solution-focused brief therapy and mindfulness approaches. I view people as the experts on their own lives and strive to ensure my practice is informed by Te Tiriti principles.
University life can be full of ups and downs. If a problem is impacting your life, together we can explore its history and its influence on you, and reflect on the personal, cultural, and societal narratives that could be contributing to this. Through our conversations, we can better understand your hopes for the future and support the development of your preferred ways of being.
Outside of counselling, music has been a significant part of my life from a young age. I have a long-standing interest in Buddhist psychology and meditation, and I love spending time with my partner, friends, and family.
