History and purpose

This scholarship was established to encourage students to continue their studies in Classics. Classics is vital to a broad based humanities education. It examines the legacies of ancient Greece and Rome, the ideas expressed through language and literature and how they have influenced the way we live today.

Who is eligible?

  • This scholarship is open to a current full time student majoring in Classical Studies, Latin, or Greek, who is intending to enrol in their third undergraduate year or Honours year majoring in Classical Studies, Latin or Greek  at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington in the year following application.

Selection criteria

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington as a full time student.
  • Applicants must be majoring in Classical Studies, Latin or Greek.
  • Applicants must be intending to enrol in 300 level or towards a Bachelor of Honours.
  • Applicants are chosen on the basis of academic merit and their passion for the subject. Financial hardship may be considered as a secondary consideration when choosing a recipient.

Application process

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Applications will normally open one month prior to the closing date. If no application link is provided below, check back again closer to the closing date. Contact us if you have any queries.

Selection process

Applicants will be shortlisted by members of academic staff (usually the Programme Director for Classics, or their nominee, and the Head of School, or their nominee.) The donor will then be sent the shortlisted applicants for review, before a final decision is made. Should there be difficulty in deciding on the recipient, applicants may be invited to an interview.

Students are asked to write a letter of thanks to the donor at the outset of their scholarship, and to share an essay that they have produced during the tenure of the scholarship at the end of the year.

The award is valued at up to $5,000, to be paid towards fees. In the event that the successful awardee also receives another fee-paying scholarship, this funding can be paid as stipend directly to the student (at the discretion of the donor).
