Description

This scholarship was established to support Māori students who are intending to study STEM-related subjects.

History

For more than 20 years TEAM IM NZ has been delivering high-value content management and unstructured data solutions for their customers. TEAM IM aims to build long-term sustainable IT business solutions providing value for all stakeholders, including customers, employees, partners, suppliers, and shareholders. TEAM IM NZ has offices in New Zealand and Australia. TEAM IM NZ aspires to support technology careers for Māori students including scholarships and internships.

Who is eligible?

  • Applicants must be New Zealand Citizens.
  • Applicants must be of Māori descent (proof of Māori ethnicity required via the online application).
  • Applicants must be intending to enrol in Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington (THW-VUW) in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) related field.

Selection criteria

  • Selection will be based on applicants that are facing financial hardship.
  • Selection will be based on applicants achieving satisfactory academic progress.
  • Wāhine are encouraged to apply.
  • Proficiency in Te Reo or a willingness to learn Te Reo will be beneficial.

Application process

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation

  • A personal statement outlining the applicant’s background, the potential impact the scholarship would have towards their study; their whanau and community; and future aspirations after studying.
  • An endorsement of iwi association (to be requested via the online application).
  • A school reference (to be requested via the online application).
  • Applicants must fill out the financial section of the application.

Selection process

The panel will consist of the Associate Dean; Academic Development, School of Engineering and Computer Science, (THW-VUW), a representative from the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Māori, (THW-VUW), and two representatives from TEAM IM NZ. Applicants will be shortlisted and invited to attend an interview.

Additional information

  • The Scholarship will be paid over three years:
    • Year 1 $8,000 will be paid towards Halls of Residence/Accommodation
    • Year 2 $8,000 will be paid towards fees.
    • Year 3 $8,000 will be paid towards fees.
  • In the final year of the scholarship, the recipient will be offered a paid summer internship at TEAM IM NZ with a possibility of a graduate role to be arranged directly with TEAM IM NZ.
  • Recipients must write a thank you letter to the donor within one month of receiving the scholarship and provide an end of year progress report each year.
  • Recipients must be maintaining satisfactory academic progress each year to be eligible to receive the scholarship. Scholarship offers are conditional on the recipient gaining University Entrance and being fully enrolled in a degree program.

Regulations and conditions

  2. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being enrolled in a full-year programme (as stipulated by Studylink as full-time), within the criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  3. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  4. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other University awards.
  5. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  6. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  7. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
