Takis Koutsos Memorial Scholarship
History
The Takis Koutsos Memorial Scholarship was established by the friends and family of Takis Koutsos. Mr Koutsos was a post-WW II child immigrant to New Zealand from Greece who had a lifelong interest in Greek archaeology and history and was a close friend of VUW Emeritus Professor John Psathas, who worked as a stormwater engineer in Napier. The scholarship honours Mr Koutsous's heritage and interests.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be New Zealand born of Greek descent or an immigrant from Greece.
- Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate, honours or Master’s degree at Victoria University of Wellington (any faculty) .
- While both undergraduate and postgraduate students are eligible to apply, preference may be given to postgraduate students.

Application process
A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation

- A personal statement from applicants describing their Greek heritage, community involvement, plans for study, and career aspirations
- Academic transcripts (only for applicants that are not current VUW students) .
Selection process
The decision will be made by members of the Koutsos family and relevant VUW academics, dependent on the applicant’s field of study.
Additional information
- The scholarship will be paid directly to the student in two instalments (Trimester 1 and Trimester 2). The Trimester 2 payment is contingent on continued enrolment and satisfactory academic progress.
- Recipients of the scholarship are required to write a thank you letter to the donor within one month of being awarded the scholarship.
Regulations and conditions

- All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being enrolled in a full-year programme (as stipulated by Studylink as full-time), within the criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
- Where part-time study for the recipient is approved, their scholarship award may be pro-rated. This decision will be made by the decision-making panel. Before the recipient decides to reduce their workload from full-time study, this must be discussed with the Scholarships Office.
- The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
- The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other University awards; however, preference may be given to those without current scholarships or award funding.
- Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
- Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
- At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
