Sir Mark Dunajtschik PhD Scholarship in Construction
History and purpose
This scholarship is part of the establishment of a construction programme at Victoria University, supported by a donation from Sir Mark Dunajtschik. It aims to support PhD research students working with the Sir Mark Dunajtschik Professor (Chair) in Construction, focusing on research in a construction-related field.
Who is eligible
- Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to undertake PhD research in a construction-related field. Candidates should indicate in their Statement of Research Interests how their intended research aligns with construction.
- The successful applicant must have completed a Master’s qualification and be accepted into the PhD programme at Victoria University of Wellington.
Selection criteria
The successful applicant will have:
- A Master of Architecture, Construction, Architectural Engineering, or similar degree with an excellent GPA.
- Intention to complete a PhD thesis on a construction-related topic.
- Preference will be given to students experiencing financial hardship.
Application process
A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation
Applicants must have met the entry requirements for PhD study and be admitted into the PhD programme at Victoria University of Wellington. Refer to the Wellington Faculty of Graduate Research.
To be considered for the scholarship, applicants should forward the below supporting documentation to the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Research antony.pelosi@vuw.ac.nz by the deadline date.
- Statement of Research Interests.
- Name and contact details for an academic reference.
- CV.
- A personal statement to include details of financial hardship (if applicable).
Selection process
The successful recipient will be selected by a panel from the Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovation.
Additional information
- The scholarship will cover tuition fees per annum for 3 years.
- Recipients are asked to write a letter of thanks to the donor within one month of receiving the award.
- Recipients are expected to provide an end-of-year progress report each year.
Conditions
- All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being enrolled in a full-year programme (as stipulated by Studylink as full-time), within the criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
- Where part-time study for the recipient is approved, their scholarship award may be pro-rated. This decision will be made by the decision-making panel. Before the recipient decides to reduce their workload from full-time study, this must be discussed with the Scholarships Office.
- The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
- The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other University awards.
- Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
- Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
- At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
