Ruth and Oswald L Kraus Innovator-in-Residence Scholarship
History
Ruth and Oz Kraus founded Brick Row Publishing which had offices in both in New Zealand and later California. They specialised in literary publishing, particularly poetry, in the 1980s-2000s, and were very interested in fostering younger writers and artists. This biennial scholarship supports a one-trimester student residency at Wai-te-ata Press. The successful student will explore the interface between creative writing and publishing in innovative formats using the letterpress, 3D printing, and digital facilities of the Press. Collaboration with other writers, artists, translators is encouraged. Expected outputs are a publication, exhibition, launch and talk. The student will be paid a stipend and is eligible for an Individual Directed Study course credit.
Who is eligible?
- Applicants must have completed at least two years of study at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington, be enrolled at the time of the residency, and/or intend to study in the following year;
- Applicants will be expected to spend 10 weeks/400 hours physically on-site at Wai-te-ata Press during Trimester Three (November to February) to achieve the required outputs.
Selection criteria
The successful applicant will demonstrate a professional approach to their creative practice, be willing to explore and extend their current thinking, share a commitment to creative innovation, and provide evidence of successful project completion.

Selection process
Selection will be made by The Printer, Wai-te-ata Press; Chris Kraus [daughter of donors]; Director IIML; and committee composed of VUW representatives from aligned creative disciplines.
Additional information
- $8,000 stipend will be paid in 3 instalments directly to the student: beginning, mid-way upon submission of progress report, end and is eligible for an Individual Directed Study course credit (FHSS211 - 15 points, FHSS311 - 20 points or FHSS421 - 15 points).
- $4,000 towards tuition fees & levies will be paid directly to the University by the Scholarships Office (if the tuition fees and levies are less than $4,000, any remaining funds to be paid towards materials/exhibitions/promotion costs.)
- Students will have access to Wai-te-ata Press facilities, technical expertise, the University community, and local/international networks.
- A final report will be submitted to the donors’ daughter and archived at Wai-te-ata Press and the VUW Development Office.
Conditions

- All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being enrolled in a full-year programme (as stipulated by Studylink as full-time), within the criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
- The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
- The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other University awards.
- Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
- Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
