History and purpose

This fund originates from donations made by staff, students, government departments and friends of Professor Quentin-Baxter, who held a Chair in the Law Faculty at the time of his death. The Quentin-Baxter Memorial Scholarship fund is managed by the University.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide monetary assistance to students undertaking or proposing to undertake study or research in the Faculty of Law at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, and to recognize and encourage academic merit by the award of scholarships and prizes. The Fund also has discretionary monies for the relief of financial hardship.

Who is eligible?

  • Applicant must be enrolled in one or more second year law courses at VUW and intend to complete their LLB at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington
  • Applicants must be a New Zealand citizen or Permanent Resident

Selection criteria

In even number years (eg. 2024), the scholarship will be awarded to all full-time students of Māori descent who are currently enrolled in one or more second year law courses and who intend to complete an LLB at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.

In odd years (eg. 2023), the scholarship will be awarded to all full-time Pasifika students who are currently enrolled in one or more second year law courses and who intend to complete an LLB at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.

In determining the suitability of applicants, the selection committee will consider financial need, personal qualities and academic ability as well as the applicant's links with and likely contribution to their Māori and/or Pasifika community.

Application process

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation

  • A one-page personal statement explaining your circumstances and any leadership positions or details of your involvement at Victoria University of Wellington or within your community. The selection panel will also look at evidence of your personal qualities, academic merit and any other additional information included.
  • Students will be asked to fill out the Financial Information section in the application, including the submission of recent bank statements

Selection process

Successful candidates will be chosen by the Quentin-Baxter Scholarship Committee. Shortlisted applicants may be asked to come for an interview with the Committee.

Applicants will be advised on the outcome of their application as soon as possible following the closing of the scholarship.

Additional information

Recipients of this scholarship will be awarded $1,500 in their first year, and $1,000 in their second and third years respectively (provided the student achieves satisfactory academic progress as determined by the Faculty of Law).

There is no objection to this scholarship being held in conjunction with other scholarships and prizes.

Regulations and conditions

  1. A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
  2. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  3. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  4. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
  5. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  6. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  7. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
