Pat Walsh Scholarship for Second Year Students
History and purpose
This scholarship was established by Emeritus Professor Pat Walsh, who served as the Vice-Chancellor of Victoria University of Wellington from 2005 to 2014. Its purpose is to provide assistance to students who may face financial constraints that could hinder their academic pursuits.
Who is eligible?
- This scholarship is open to applicants who are enrolled full-time in the second year of their first undergraduate degree.
Selection criteria
- Applicants must be enrolled full time at Victoria University of Wellington in the second year of their first degree.
- Preference will be given to applicants who are experiencing financial hardship.
- Applicants will be expected to have a grade point average of B or above.
- Applications are open for domestic and international students.
Application process
A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation
- Certified academic records from other institutions unless you have completed all your studies at Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
- A personal statement outlining their future career plans, including what the scholarship would be used for if successful.
- Reference statement (to be requested via the online application).
- Complete the financial section of the online application.
Selection process
The successful candidate will be chosen by a Victoria University of Wellington Undergraduate Scholarships Committee.
Additional information
Recipients are required to write a letter of thanks to the donor of the scholarship.
Recipients are eligible to hold the scholarship for two years, subject to maintaining a B average.
Recipients will be encouraged to take part in WILP or Wellington Plus programmes. Information will be provided to recipients, however, registration into these programmes will not be mandatory.
Conditions

- All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
- The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
- The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
- Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
- Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
- At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
