History and purpose

This Scholarship was established in memory of Ormond Wilson, farmer, politician and scholar.

This scholarship is to support school leavers who are looking to study their first undergraduate degree under either Wellington Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences or Wellington Faculty of Science at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.

Who is eligible?

Applicants must be:

  • Entered for the NCEA Level 3 and/or Scholarship examinations in the year prior to starting studies at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington
  • Under nineteen years of age on the first day of December of the year prior to starting study at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington
  • New Zealand citizens or Permanent Residents
  • Enrolled or intending to enrol full time for the first year of any bachelor’s degree offered by Wellington Faculty of Humanities and Social Science or Wellington Faculty of Science at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington
  • Intending to remain enrolled at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington at least until the completion of their bachelor degree(s)

Selection criteria

  • This scholarship will be awarded on academic merit, but consideration will also be given to other factors such as character, qualities of leadership and contribution to cultural and/or sporting activities.
  • The financial circumstances of the candidates will also be considered. Priority will be given to applicants whose family background is such, that because of their limited financial resources they would be facing considerable financial hardship because of deciding to go to university.

Application process

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Shortlisted applicants may be requested to attend an interview.

Scholarship specific documentation

  • Personal statement outlining why you think you are eligible for the scholarship to include details of sports, cultural or hobby clubs or interests, positions of leadership etc both within and outside school
  • Reference from School Principal
  • Applicants must complete the financial section of the application

Selection process

  • Recipients will be selected by the Victoria University Undergraduate Scholarships Committee.
  • The selection committee shall have regard not only to the academic ability of the applicants as evidenced by their performance in the NCEA Level 3 and/or Scholarship examinations, but also to other factors such as character, qualities of leadership and contribution to cultural and/or sporting activities.
  • The financial circumstances of the candidates will also be considered.

Additional information

  • The funds will be paid directly to the student once they have enrolled at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington
  • Recipients must write a letter of thanks to the donor of the scholarship.

Regulations and conditions

  1. A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
  2. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being enrolled in a full-year programme (as stipulated by Studylink as full-time), within the criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  3. Where part-time study for the recipient is approved, their scholarship award may be pro-rated. This decision will be made by the decision-making panel. Before the recipient decides to reduce their workload from full-time study, this must be discussed with the Scholarships Office.
  4. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  5. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other University awards.
  6. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  7. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  8. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
