Master of Design Technology Research Scholarship
History and purpose
The Master of Design Technology (MDT) Research Scholarship supports students dedicated to research in design technology. Tailored for individuals keen on advancing technological applications in design, this scholarship allows recipients to deeply engage in pioneering areas of VFX, game design, animation, 3D motion graphics, and multimedia design. Awardees will receive funding to advance their research, enabling them to engage new applications within the dynamic fields of VFX and Animation.
The MDT programme now includes a 90-point research portfolio thesis option, increasing flexibility and enhancing learning opportunities. This pathway enables students to investigate design technology areas that align with their personal and professional goals, bolstering their skills through focused research and critical analysis. The scholarship aims to highlight this new option and promote the available research opportunities to Master's students.
Who is eligible?
All applicants enrolled or intending to enrol in the MDT pursuing the 90-point research portfolio thesis option are eligible.
Selection criteria
1. Demonstrated ability to think critically, supported by previous projects or publications in VFX, animation, or related fields.
2. Robust analytical and research skills, evidenced by success in complex design scenarios.
3. Clear expression of personal research interests that align with the themes and goals of the MDT programme.
Application process
A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Selection process
A recommendation will be made by the Programme Director of the Master of Design Technology in consultation with the Head of School and the Director of Postgraduate Programmes the School of Design Innovation. The Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovation, or their delegate, will award the scholarship.
Additional information
The scholarship will be paid directly towards tuition fees by the Scholarships Office.
Conditions
- A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
- All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being enrolled in a full-year programme (as stipulated by Studylink as full-time), within the criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
- Where part-time study for the recipient is approved, their scholarship award may be pro-rated. This decision will be made by the decision-making panel. Before the recipient decides to reduce their workload from full-time study, this must be discussed with the Scholarships Office.
- The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
- The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other University awards.
- Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
- Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
- At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
