History and purpose

This award has been established to support aspiring Pasifika students to study in a Business discipline at the Wellington School of Business and Government at Te Herenga Waka–Victoria University of Wellington. This scholarship aims to provide financial support to enable Pasifika students to further their careers in business, recognising the need for greater representation from the Pasifika community in the New Zealand business sector.

Who is eligible?

  • This scholarship is open to Pasifika students enrolled or intending to enrol in Honours, a Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma or Master’s degree in Commerce, Professional Business Analysis, Professional Accounting, Global Business, Actuarial Science or the Executive MBA. Both full-time and part-time students are eligible to apply (see additional information).
  • Applicants are expected to have met the admissions requirements for the qualification of interest.

Selection criteria

  • Applicants must be of Pasifika descent.
  • Applicants will be assessed on academic merit however; preference may be given to applicants experiencing financial hardship.
  • This Scholarship is not applicable for postgraduate programmes in government (e.g., public policy, public administration, public administration e-government, restorative justice or social policy).

Scholarship specific documentation

  • A one-page personal statement, explaining your reasons for attending or wishing to attend the Wellington School of Business and Government, how this education will support your academic or professional goals and why you believe you merit the scholarship. You should also include any leadership positions and details of your involvement in your community. Please provide an outline of your personal circumstances, including details of financial difficulties.
  • A character reference (to be requested via the online application).
  • An endorsement of ethnicity (to be requested via the online application).

Selection process

Recipients will be selected by a panel comprised of the Dean of Wellington School of Business and Government (or their nominee), the Assistant Vice Chancellor, Pasifika (or their nominee) and the WSBG Professional Programmes Executive Director (or  equivalent person).

Additional information

Recipients are expected to write a thank you letter to do the donors of the scholarship within one month of receiving the award.

If part time study for the recipient is approved, their scholarship award may be pro-rated. This decision will be made by the decision-making panel.

To retain this scholarship for the full tenure, the recipient must continue to be enrolled and maintain satisfactory academic progress.

Conditions

  2. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  3. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  4. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
  5. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  6. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  7. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
