Jim and Barbara Milburn Scholarship in History
History and purpose
This scholarship was established in recognition of the friendship made and the pleasurable times enjoyed during their student days by Jim (1941-1950) and Barbara (1948-1951). They echo the period when the small, mainly part-time student body came alive in the late afternoons and early evenings and centred on the lecture rooms, the cafeteria, the gym, the tennis courts and the library. The sports practices and tournaments, the debating society, the extravs, and the lively student politics of the immediate post war years were a major part of student life. Barbara with blues in tennis and indoor basketball and Jim, debating society, Plunket Medal, Union Prize and Student Executive participated to the full and feel a debt to the ‘College’ which first gave them the interest in learning and the arts which inspired a lifetime of teaching and publishing.
In 2022, the Victoria University of Wellington Foundation established this scholarship through a bequest from the Estate of James Dalton Milburn, QSM.
