Jonathan Hunt Memorial Prize

This prize - formerly the Speaker's Prize - is renamed in honour of Rt Hon. Jonathan Hunt, Speaker New Zealand's Parliament from December 1999 through to March 2005, following his passing on 8 March 2024. The former speaker retired from Parliament in 2005 after more than 38 years' service, taking up the position of High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, appointed a member of the Order of New Zealand - the country's highest civilian honour - in the 2005 New Years Honours.

As Speaker, Jonathan Hunt was a strong supporter of the University's parliamentary internship programme, having a parliamentary intern in his office every year since the programme's inception in 2000. In 2002, at a suggestion from the programme's organiser, Professor Stephen Levine, Jonathan Hunt established the Speaker's Prize, awarded annually to encourage excellence among students taking part in the internship.

1. The prize shall be known as the Jonathan Hunt Memorial Prize.

2. The prize shall be awarded annually to the student enrolled in the Political Science and International Relations Programme's parliamentary internship course who is judged to be most worthy of the award.

3. The prize shall be awarded on the recommendation of the Head of the School of History, Philosophy, Political Science and International Relations in consultation with the staff member responsible for the School's parliamentary internship course.

4. The name of the student awarded this prize shall be inscribed on the Honours Board at the premises of the Political Science and International Relations Programme and on the Programme's website.

5. Recipients will be asked to write a letter of appreciation which will be forwarded appropriately.

This prize, originally established in 2002 by the Rt Hon Jonathan Hunt, renamed in 2024 in honour of the late Speaker, is provided annually to encourage excellence among students taking part in the Parliamentary Internship postgraduate course offered by the University’s Political Science and International Relations Programme.
