Maurice Goldsmith Prize
Information
This prize, established in 2001 via the Victoria University Foundation, arises from a fund donated by Maurice Goldsmith, Emeritus Professor of Political Theory at the University of Exeter and Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at Victoria University of Wellington. The first prize to undergraduate students was awarded in 2002. The first prize to honours students was awarded in 2014.
Two prizes are awarded annually:
- one to the student who, in completing their undergraduate degree in Philosophy in the year of the award, is judged the best student of the year in Philosophy and is most worthy of the award; and
- one to the student who, in completing their honours degree in Philosophy in the year of the award, is judged the best student of the year in Philosophy and is most worthy of the award.
The prize is awarded on the recommendation of the Head of the School of History, Philosophy, Political Science and International Relations in consultation with the academic staff and the Head of the Philosophy programme.
In any given year each award may be shared between a maximum of two students.
A student receiving the prize for their undergraduate study remains eligible to be a recipient of the prize if subsequently completing an honours degree.
The value of the prize, in any year, shall be determined by the Victoria University Foundation after consideration of the income from the fund. If in any year the income from the fund or any part thereof is not expended, it may be added to the fund.
Each year the prize is awarded, a photograph of the successful candidates will be displayed on the premises of the School of History, Philosophy, Political Science and International Relations.
The recipients will be asked to write a letter of appreciation which will be forwarded appropriately.
