Strategic and economic engagement between India and East Asia–Pacific and the impact of major country dynamics

Lecture by Mr Amitabh Kant at Victoria University of Wellington. Dr Kant is CEO of NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India) and a key adviser to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Presented by the New Zealand India Research Institute and the Asia New Zealand Foundation.

Mr Kant discussed India’s “Act East” approach, in the context of the rise of India and its importance in the Asia–Pacific region. He reflected on India’s strategic and economic relations with key regional players, notably China and the United States.

Mr Kant also assessed opportunities for New Zealand with India and how he sees the New Zealand relationship with India developing in the near future. For an audience interested in India, this was a fascinating strategic take from a key influencer in India.

Mr Kant was the recipient of the Prime Minister’s Sir Edmund Hillary Fellowship for 2017.
